Engineering a Compact "Tank": The Wheel Bag Project

Project Profile

Client: Crashpad Gear
Product: Rear Wheel Bag
Manufacturer: Dingfeng Ibagcase
Service: OEM / ODM Heavy-Duty Sewing

The Manufacturing Challenge

In the overland equipment market, "Universal Fit" often results in poor performance. Crashpad required a specialized manufacturing solution for the Suzuki Jimny (JB74). The challenge was to scale down their legendary durability into a compact form factor without compromising construction quality.

Key Technical Obstacles:

Fitment on Small Tyres:

The Jimny spare tyre (typically 195/80R15 to 215/75R15) is significantly narrower than standard 4x4 tyres. A standard bag would hang loosely, obscuring rear lights and rattling on corrugated roads.

Material Rigidity:

The bag needed to hold its boxy shape even when empty, preventing the "sagging sack" look.

Cross-Contamination Control:

As a "Dirty Gear Bag" for rubbish or wet straps, the interior had to be fully isolated from the exterior shell.

Our Technical Solution

Dingfeng Ibagcase implemented a "Dual-Shell" Construction method to meet the client's rigorous specifications.

A. Material Selection: The 410/600 Ratio

To ensure longevity in harsh UV conditions, we adhered to a specific material combination:

Outer Shell: 410 GSM Heavy-Duty Canvas. We applied a UV-stabilized hard coating to the grey canvas. This treatment prevents the "fading to purple" effect common in cheaper textiles and provides structural stiffness.

Inner Lining: 600 GSM PVC. We utilized a high-visibility orange PVC for the lining. This 600 GSM weight is significantly thicker than standard tent floors, allowing it to withstand sharp sticks, firewood, or broken glass without puncturing.

B. Structural Engineering

To solve the fitment issue on the smaller Jimny wheel:

Custom Harness Geometry: Our pattern makers designed a contoured strap system specifically for the Jimny's tread width.

X-Box Stitching: All webbing anchor points feature automated bartack stitching (X-Box pattern) to handle dynamic loads.

Sandwich Reinforcement: The strap attachment points are reinforced with an internal layer of webbing between the canvas and PVC, ensuring the heavy-duty metal buckles do not tear away from the main body under tension.

C. Functional Details

Drainage System: A brass eyelet was installed at the base of the PVC liner (floating bottom design), allowing users to hose out the bag directly.

Hardware: We sourced Zinc-Alloy metal buckles instead of plastic, ensuring they remain brittle-resistant in freezing temperatures.
