Every September, global buyers will ask the same question: "Can we ship our orders in time for Christmas?"

The answer is rarely just about production time. It also depends on how quickly the product is approved, whether materials are ready, and how much factory capacity is still available. Many buyers look at a standard production lead time of 45–60 days and plan backward from there. But custom bags and cases involve many more steps, especially around China's major holiday seasons.

In 2026, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 25–27, followed by National Day Golden Week from October 1–7. These back-to-back holidays significantly compress the available production window. Treating this period as simply a 10-day factory shutdown misses the bigger issue: production time before and after the holidays is also heavily compressed.

Holidays Cause More Than Simple Factory Downtime

A national holiday does not mean production simply stops and then returns to normal the day the factory reopens.

Before the holiday, factories and subcontractors prioritize urgent pre-break shipments. Sampling revisions, material sourcing, and new order confirmations slow down dramatically.

After the holiday, production lines often return to a backlog of pending orders. Materials need to be restocked, schedules need to be rearranged, and suppliers need time to get production moving again.

This is where small component delays can become big problems. Zippers, buckles, custom logos, fabrics, and foam inserts may come from different suppliers. If one key component is late, the entire custom bag production run may have to wait.

Final sewing and assembly may only take a few days. Getting all the right materials and components ready for production often takes much longer.

Repeat Orders vs. New Projects

Where your project is in its development stage makes a big difference to what is still possible before the end of the year:

Repeat Orders: Still possible for late-year delivery, as long as the existing patterns, BOMs, color codes, and other details are confirmed and materials can be prepared before late September.

New OEM/ODM Builds: Christmas 2026 delivery is already very difficult for most new projects. New molds, design development, sample adjustments, and product testing all take time, leaving very little room before the holiday period.

Plan Backward from Your Delivery Date

Instead of only asking how quickly a factory can make the order, start with the date the goods need to arrive at your warehouse.

Then work backward and allow time for local transportation, ocean freight, export preparation, mass production, material production, and pre-production sample approval.

For many custom projects, the full order-to-delivery timeline can easily reach 80 to 110 days. If the order is pushed into October, shipping may already fall into a much busier and more expensive freight period.

The earlier the key details are confirmed, the more flexibility you have to manage materials, production, and shipping.

The Real Value of Fall: Spring 2027 Prototyping

September and October can be much more valuable when used to prepare your Spring 2027 product line.

Products such as rugged tool bags, medical bags, and protective equipment cases often need several rounds of testing and adjustment. Load-bearing performance, internal fit, padding, and organization all need to work properly before production starts.

Starting drawing reviews and the first prototypes now gives you enough time to make improvements without rushing. It also allows you to finalize your pre-production sample before December, giving you a much stronger starting point for 2027 production and helping reduce the impact of the Chinese New Year factory shutdown.
